Part 1 of 3

Alaska offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes and adventurous experiences in the United States. This 4-day Part One Alaskan adventure is a perfect introduction to this vast wilderness, combining scenic drives, outdoor activities, and local culture. This itinerary takes you from Anchorage to Healy, then south to Palmer, with plenty of stops to explore and enjoy the unique Alaskan environment.

Day 1: Talkeetna

Kick off your Alaskan adventure in Anchorage. Hitting the road with your own car lets you call the shots on your schedule and pause at stunning viewpoints or charming local towns whenever you like. The drive up to Healy is around 4.5 hours, but it's definitely worth taking a break half way in Talkeetna.

Talkeetna's got a vibrant artist vibe, amazing views of the Alaska Range, and used to have a famous cat mayor named Stubbs. This little town is full of cool stuff. Don't miss the "Welcome to Beautiful Talkeetna" sign and the adorable Historic Main Street, loaded with shops, cafes, and galleries.

Stop by Mountain High Pizza Pie, affectionately known as the "Purple Pizzeria," for some lunch. This place has a cozy cabin vibe, homemade dough, and a lively outdoor patio. It's a laid-back spot where you order at the counter and then grab a seat either indoors or out on the deck. They make their own sauces, dough, and meats every day, often using fresh Alaskan ingredients like fiddlehead ferns or salmon when they're in season.

After Lunch we've got an awesome adventure with the 2-hour Talkeetna Float Tour! It kicks off at 1:30, and all this fun is yours for just $101! You'll hop on a shuttle that takes you to the Talkeetna River. Once there, you'll get a quick safety rundown before heading off on a six-mile float down this gorgeous glacier-fed river, teeming with salmon and other wildlife. Your guides will share fun facts about the plants, animals, and scenery you pass by. Keep your eyes peeled for bears, eagles, fish, beavers, moose, foxes, and waterfowl along the way. You'll finish up by joining the mighty Susitna River for the loop back to Talkeetna.

Next up, take a joyride over to Healy, a charming little town smack dab in the middle of Alaska. This picturesque place is your ticket to some of the most jaw-dropping natural wonders around. Don’t forget to chow down at 49th State Brewing, the reigning champ of brewpubs in the area. It's famous for its gigantic outdoor beer garden, locally sourced game meats, award-winning craft beers, and the legendary, original "Into the Wild" replica bus that made its big-screen debut in the 2007 movie.

Where to Stay in Alaska

Day 2: Denali

Start your day with a bang on the exciting Denali ATV Trailblazer tour! It's just a quick 13-minute drive back towards Talkeetna. The adventure kicks off daily at 10 am. For 3.5 hours of non-stop fun, it's about $270 if you're riding solo. Got a group? Awesome! They've got vehicles for up to 6 riders at just $127 each. The more, the merrier! You'll spend more time on the trail than any other off-road tour in the Denali area. Dive into the thrill as you cruise through lush forests and along stunning rivers.

For lunch, swing by Denali Doghouse,  a favorite among travelers for a quick and tasty bite. They serve up classic American comfort food with a cool Alaskan spin. Try their signature grilled hot dogs made with delicious buffalo meat and reindeer sausage.

Afterwards check out the Denali Visitor Center, which is like a natural history museum and cultural hangout. It's got a huge, timber-framed hall packed with interactive exhibits, wildlife displays, and geographic maps. Entry is $15, and you can catch the park film every 30 minutes. It’s about 20 minutes long and gives you some cool insights into the park’s wildlife, geology, and history.

In the evening, make your way back to Healy for a fun Horse-Drawn Covered Wagon Ride with some Backcountry Dining thrown in. This 3-hour adventure is $112, and it's best to book the 5 pm slot. Head out from Healy for this wagon trip along the northern edge of Denali National Park. Soak in the mountain views and then take a break to enjoy a tasty backcountry meal. This ride is the chill way to take in the wilderness while having a meal under the open sky.

Day 3: Drive to Palmer

Wake up early to arrive at the Savage River Loop Trail in Denali National Park. This 2.2-mile trail is flat and scenic,  It is widely celebrated as one of the most accessible tundra walks in the park, tracing the edge of the roaring Savage River as it cuts through a dramatic, narrow rocky canyon. Perfect for a morning hike to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air.

After your hike, make sure to stop by McKinley Creekside Café & Bakery for breakfast! The café serves up delicious freshly baked goods and hearty meals that will get you ready for the drive ahead. It's a must-visit destination beloved by both locals and tourists!

The drive from Denali to Palmer is around 4.5 hours. Make sure to take breaks at the pull-offs to soak in the scenery. The Denali Viewpoints North and South offer breathtaking views of North America's tallest peaks and the surrounding wilderness. Also, check out the Hurricane Gulch Bridge—it's an amazing piece of engineering with awesome panoramic views.

When you're in Palmer, make sure to hit up the Palmer Ale House for dinner. It's a popular spot where you can chill with some craft beers and comfort food. They've got an impressive lineup of over 40 craft beers on tap, delicious pub grub, and a spacious outdoor patio that's perfect for enjoying live music during the summer.

Friday Fling (May through September): Every week, the downtown transforms into a huge block party featuring food trucks, fresh local produce, and live music.

Palmer/Alaska State Fair: August 21 to 23, offering a lively mix of entertainment and local culture.

Day 4: Palmer

Get ready to wrap up Part One with an awesome experience on a Full-day Guided Kayak tour on the Knik River. Starting at 9 am, this 8-hour adventure is just $380, including kayaking and lunch. Glide down the serene Knik River, surrounded by towering mountains and waters so blue you cant tell where the water ends and the sky begins. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife—birds, seals, and maybe even a moose taking a swim. Dig into lunch surrounded by glaciers and icebergs. This full-day kayak tour on the Knik River is your ticket to an epic Alaskan adventure, with expert guides and a solid plan. Enjoy the stunning views, peaceful waters, and the excitement of exploring one of Alaska's most beautiful rivers.

After a long day out on the water, grab dinner at RW'S Hamburger House. This cozy spot, set in a log-cabin style building, is famous for its fresh, hand-pressed burgers and cool drag-racing themed decor. It's the perfect laid-back place to wrap up Part One of your Alaskan adventure. Just a heads up, they only take cash, so hit up an ATM before you get there.
