Day 1: Embrace the Falls Up Close

Start your adventure at Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States. Begin your journey at Prospect Point and the Observation Tower, where you can take in a sweeping view of the magnificent Horseshoe Falls. This massive waterfall stretches an impressive 2,600 feet across the U.S.-Canada border, and the sight is truly breathtaking.

As you're enjoying the views, make sure to snag a poncho for your next adventure—the Maid of the Mist/Cave of the Winds tour. This classic tour, available from May to October for $115, takes you right into the heart of the falls. You'll be surrounded by the roar and mist, then an elevator will whisk you 175 feet down into the Niagara Gorge. You'll walk along wooden paths to the Hurricane Deck, where you'll be just 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls. Get ready for winds up to 68 mph and prepare to get soaked. It's an epic way to really feel the power of the water!

After such an exhilarating encounter with the falls, take a moment to relax at Luna Island. Just a quick three minute walk away this small, serene spot offers peaceful views right on the edge of the falls, and it’s the perfect place to look out for a rainbow amidst the mist.

Before you head out for dinner, why not switch out of those wet clothes and slip into something more comfy?

The Anchor Bar is about a half-hour drive into Buffalo, but get ready to dig into the ORIGINAL buffalo wings, the legendary dish that’s been making waves around the world. Yep, this is where that spicy sensation, as famous as Buffalo, New York itself, was born.

Don’t forget to pop back down the road after dinner for the nightly illumination and fireworks show, which runs from May to October at 10 p.m. The falls light up in vibrant colors, creating a magical atmosphere that you won’t want to miss.

Day 2: Explore the Gorge and History

Grab a picnic lunch and swap the misty splash of the falls for some serious stair-stepping and rugged trailblazing at Whirlpool State Park. Here, you can descend into the stunning Niagara Gorge. Embark on the Whirlpool Rapids Trail, a 2.5-mile adventure featuring 400 steps leading down to the water. Follow the dazzlingly blue Niagara River to Whirlpool Point, the perfect spot to take a lunch break. Just be careful not to take an accidental swim—the currents are like nature’s washing machine!

The hike takes about two hours and provides a peaceful escape into the great outdoors. If the hike feels like too much, don’t worry—there are plenty of other trails in the park to choose from, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely picnic whenever you get hungry.

In just a quick ten-minute drive, you'll be right in front of history at the Schoellkopf Power Plant Ruins. Sitting on the American side of the Niagara Gorge, these fascinating remnants were once part of the world's biggest hydroelectric powerhouse! Known for its dramatic collapse back in 1956, this historic spot is now a cool, free public attraction ready for you to check out.

Essential Gear for the Falls

  • Waterproof Bag: Grab a waterproof phone pouch or backpack to keep your stuff dry when you need it.

  • Comfy, Water-Friendly Shoes: Go for waterproof shoes or sandals with good grip. Skip the flip-flops on the slippery Cave of the Winds decks.

  • Extra Clothing: Bring along a change of socks and a light, quick-dry outfit. The mist can soak you fast, and sitting in wet clothes isn't fun.

  • Sun & Eye Protection: Sunglasses are a must to handle the water glare, and a hat will help keep the mist out of your eyes.
